Disable weather report service

Latest response

On my RHEL6 server, a process that I haven't been able to identify is periodically opening a connection to a www.noaa.gov server, presumably to request a weather report. This is probably to support the weather report applet for Gnome desktop. I would like to turn off this service, but I haven't been able to identify it. Does anyone know where this service is configured and how to disable it? No weather report icon is showing on either of the default desktops. Thanks!

The icon would not appear on the desktop, but within the 'bar' at the top or perhaps bottom of the screen. You may only see a '-' if it can't acquire the weather information. Try looking for it and then just 'Remove from panel' by right clicking.

It appears that weather is part of the clock applet. Unchecking the Weather and Temperature checkboxes on the clock properties and removing the clock from the panel does not stop the periodic requests sent to a NOAA server.
