Running authconfig or directly editing the PAM files

When I see:

"User changes will be destroyed the next time authconfig is run."

At the top of every pam config file I get the impression that I should be using authconfig to make changes. Most days that would actually be my preference, but I only ever see people discussing direct edits.

Should I just uninstall authconfig and avoid a potential overwrite?
