Issue with Display resolution and Wi-Fi settings on new laptop

Latest response

I have new laptop with Intel Core i5-6300U CPU. I have installed RHEL 6.6 on it. I have installed it as a development workstation.
The laptop has a 14" display. I want the display resolution to be selectable for two or three values like 1024x768 800 x 600 etc.
But When I go to System>Preferences>Display, the Monitor is shown as unknown and only one resolution is visible, 1368 x 768.
How can I make all the possible resolutions visible? Also, how can I set up Wi-Fi connection?
I tried to search for forums and saw some discussions related to xorg.conf. So I went to /etc/X11 and opened xorg.conf file. I found only following three lines
Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "vesa"
EndSection.
I suppose something is missing in this file.
I would be greatful if I could get some support on this.
