Satellite 6.4

Latest response

Im getting ready to install Sat 6.4 when it comes out. Do you install with all the options "dhcp, dns, tftp"? I definetly need tftp for kikstart purposes, but not sure if we need dns/dhcp in our environment. Can you install all the options and use what you want?

Also do you need to configure firewall on the satellite host? Or can we just use our network firewall?

Hello Gene,

We don't use dns/dhcp through my satellite. We have our own dns/dhcp which is more than sufficient. the tftp is handy enough if you happen to use PXE methods. We happened to have our own separate PXE server that we kept separate so we didn't need tftp on the satellite either.

Regarding a firewall, either option works well provided your security is set up sufficiently in either method, I know that's a vague answer in this paragraph, but the details/specifics for either scenario would be quite in depth.

RJ, Do you do "yum update" prior to doing a fresh install of satellite 6.4 on a system? Or Do you do it after you install Satellite 6.4. The reason I ask is that one of the steps prior to install is subscription-manager repos --disable "*"

Thank You RJ, any other suggestions from your experience?

We have been doing that for a while now on Satellite 6.2. We only need satellite to PXE boot. Our DHCP and DNS is too much for Satellite. Here is the install line I use to set it up:

satellite-installer --scenario satellite \ --certs-server-cert=/root/hammer-scripts/ssl-build/$(hostname -s).cer \ --certs-server-cert-req=/root/hammer-scripts/ssl-build/$(hostname -s).csr \ --certs-server-key=/root/hammer-scripts/ssl-build/$(hostname -s).key \ --certs-server-ca-cert "/root/hammer-scripts/ssl-build/public-CA-incommon.cer" \ --foreman-initial-organization $IORG \ --foreman-initial-location=$LOCATION \ --foreman-admin-username $USER \ --foreman-admin-password "$PASS" \ --foreman-proxy-dns-managed=false \ --foreman-proxy-dhcp-managed=false \ --foreman-proxy-tftp true \ --foreman-proxy-tftp-servername $(hostname)

Satellite 6.4 has cool vertical navigation interface, notification drawer, composite content views and so on.

It is recommended to use Satellite Upgrade Helper tool for upgrade assessment (below is the link)

Do you do "yum update" prior to doing a fresh install of satellite 6.4 on the system?

Yes. It is recommended to do yum update. Also, enable required repos for the free install.
