How do I register RHEL 5.3 with RHN?

Latest response

I am trying to register a system I have with RHEL 5.3, 32bit with rhn and it is not working. subscription-manager doesn't exist and rhn_register opens up a gui and when I try to click through the pages it says an error happened that shouldn't have and I can't get any further.

Why 5.3? Because a customer is using it and can't/won't upgrade.

I can't even get to rhn.redhat.com through the version of Firefox installed. I get an error that states "Cannot communicate securely with peer: no common encryption algorithms"

Can anyone help me?

Thanks!

Hi Bill,

Unfortunately that can't work - RHN is deprecated and Extended Update Support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.3 has ended. :)

Bill..

Is there a compelling reason you can not use RHEL 7.5? just curious.

If you feel chained to RHEL 5 for some reason, explain perhaps on what dilemma you are facing - and perhaps those in the community can give you suggestions on how (or why) to upgrade.

I'd totally avoid RHEL 5.x

Hi RJ,

The 5.3 is being driven by a potential customer. I wasn't told why...its apparently above my pay grade. :-)

Thanks for responding,

Bill

"I'd totally avoid RHEL 5.x" ... I completely agree with you, RJ ! :)

Thanks Christian. I believe that will convince the customer that 5.3 can't be "updated" to support newer hardware.

You're welcome Bill,

I hope so ... and, what should convince the customer even more is the security aspect.
Running such an old system which doesn't receive updates is an extremely high risk. :)

Christian
