RHEL 7.5 Beta - testing results (various issues)

Latest response

I have created a KVM virtual machine with virt-manager in order to test the coming point release of RHEL 7 server, the RHEL 7.5 beta version was released a few days ago. There are some bugs, such like the complete freezing of the Anaconda installer during the preparation of the installation process ... which makes it necessary to reboot from the installation medium and start all over from scratch several times.

Another bug is that after a successful installation the system boots with an "ACPI PCC probe failed" error. I tested different variants : Minimal install (without a GUI) / Server with GUI / EFI (gpt) / Legacy BIOS (msdos) / Default partitioning (LVM) / Custom (standard) partitioning. The GUI version only provides GNOME Classic, regardless if I choose the GNOME or the GNOME Classic option on the GDM login screen.

But the most important bug is that whatever I try, I am not able to register the system and attach my subscription. The virtual machine has the same same configuration as the properly running RHEL 7.4 Server VM. Does anybody experience similar problems - or does someone have an idea how to solve these issues ? Hopefully a Red Hat employee reads this post and passes over the information to the developer team.

Unfortunately I can't continue to further test the new edition, due to the fact that without registration and subscription attachment the installation of additional packages is impossible. Just in case it matters or makes a difference, I am wanting to attach the free no-cost Red Hat Developer Suite subscription. But the last time when I tested RHEL 7.4 Beta it worked properly with the free Developer Suite subscription.

Thanks Christian!

I’ll inform the Red Hat Accelerator Program about this as well. They’re garnering results on this. This would be a great spot for others to discuss anything they discover as well.

Kind Regards, -RJ

Hey, that is a good idea ...
Thank you very much RJ !

Cheers :)

Hello Christian,

Maybe a silly question, but do you have enough Developer Subscriptions? You can check this under the subscription menu of Customer Portal.

Jan Gerrit Kootstra

Hi Jan Gerrit,

There are no silly questions ... I have one Developer subscription which allows me to set up 100 virtual systems.
There are plenty free seats to set up additional VMs - but you are right to ask - it could have been the culprit. :)

Christian

In my case when I run auto-attach the Developer subscription get's replaced by a RHEL standard subscription, because the installation claims that OpenStack has been installed. Very strange for I have not found any such rpm's.

Hi Jan Gerrit,

This is what I receive when I try to register the system on a "Minimal installation" :

sudo subscription-manager register
Registering to: subscription.rhsm.redhat.com:443/subscription
Username: <my-redhat-account-login>
Password: <my-redhat-account-password>
You must first accept Red Hat's Terms and conditions.
Please visit https://www.redhat.com/wapps/tnc/termsack?event[]=signIn .
You may have to log out of and back into the Customer Portal in order to see the terms.

The same happens on a "Server with GUI" installation after accepting the license.

Christian

Hello all,

Something strange happened - I finally could register the beta system and attach the subscription successfully and here is what I did :
I connected to the system via ssh and pasted the link https://www.redhat.com/wapps/tnc/termsack?event[]=signIn into a browser on my fedora 27 workstation host where I was already signed in to my Red Hat account. Instead of the "support" page that opened in the browser from within the running RHEL 7.5 Beta VM, this time I indeed was offered to accept the licence, strange, really strange. :)

Regards,
Christian

I would expect to see a similar question during the first boot before the registration, instead of during registration.

Yes Jan Gerrit, that is the expected behaviour and what I told you above - in the "Server with GUI" installation I was asked during the first boot and accepted the license, but nevertheless got the terminal output I have showed you. :)

Regards,
Christian
