HUGE overnight change to RHEL 7.3 Optional RPM repo?

Latest response

We had failed repo syncs on the RHEL 7.3 "Optional RPMs" repo for the last two nights. Looking into it, the repo sync process on our Satellite showed close to 9000 updated .rpm's it need to download, at almost 13 gigabytes total.
It's all synced up again now, but is it normal for this many RPMs to change, essentially overnight, or was there some sort of issue with the metadata that was being published, or what?
