failed to setup up remote access XDMCP on RHEL 7.3

Latest response

I have followed the steps outlined under https://access.redhat.com/solutions/2736 to enable remote access from Windows machine.

Apart from opening up 6000-6010/tcp on firewall, I have also open up 177/udp & 7100/tcp.

When I launch Xming on Windows, all I get is a blank screen. Is there other configuration I need to enable?

Run telnet from your Windows machine to check if ports are open and listening on the RHEL machine. Check firewall logs for connections via 6000-6010/tcp, 177/udp & 7100/tcp.

I have been after this issue for some 3-5 weeks now, but it has eluded me as well!

The fact of the matter is, the default Gnome 3 install appears to be the issue for most cases. Even after following everything I have read across the spectrum of threads on this, there's been no positive outcome. It appears as though the advanced display characteristics of Gnome 3 is the culprit. What I am referring to is the 3D OpenGL direct rendering capability within the environment of the Gnome 3 install. At least, that's what I understood the problem to be while attempting XDMCP...?

My opinion and recommendation to the Red Hat Team is simply this; Please include a less "feature robust" X environment as the default on the installation ISO like the one in the repo---LightDM. After all, this is a server operating environment and most people like myself only add the remote or otherwise X environment when absolutely necessary. That being said, it's my developers who require the point-and-click GUI causing me to install the X environment. Of course the very next question/order I get from them is "where's my remote GUI" screen on my Windows PC.

So, in so far as a response, I look to the RH Team and others here to make some form of definitive statement regarding the default "Server with GUI" group install not allowing for a more simple configuration for a tool like Xming. However, and there always is, OpenText Exceed has a plug-in 3D capability to their X server product. I know this because I purchased it without it and now want to kick myself---LOL! I believe that addition to their package may do the trick where Gnome 3 is concerned. See here: http://connectivity.opentext.com/customer-care/3D-desktop.aspx

In closing, and to the RH Team, PLEASE PLEASE-PLEASE, have something simple like LightDM or Xfce as the default install when performing the "Server with GUI" install choice! Some folks like myself cannot get to the remote repos---Installed in a secure closed environment---Thanks for listening!
