Difference in memory utilization top vs vmware
Greetings all;
Have encountered an issue, according to top one of our Redhat 6.8 vm's is reporting 16gb memory available, 16gb memory used. 156164k free, 722480k cached, swap 2.6gb allocated 2.6gb used. Meanwhile VMware performance monitor is reporting memory utilization at 25% for the last month. My question is why the difference in memory reporting. Upon rebooting the vm, the output from htop and top reveal memory utilization nearly equal to what VMware is reporting.
Thank you for any and all input

VMware memory metrics and what you see in the OS are different because a guest is not using all the memory assigned to it all the time. You can read more about here. Understanding Memory Resource Management
