Difference between 7Server and 7.x Repositories?

Latest response

On Satellite 6.1, under Repositories, it is a slow process to synchronize repositories for a new organization. One question that comes to mind is how minimal a set of repositories could/should I set to sync? What is the difference between, for instance Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 Server RPMs x86_64 7Server and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 Server RPMs x86_64 7.2 ?

If I need the X.Y type repositories, do I need to occasionally return to the Repositories menu and select new releases manually as they come out? Is there a way to script this?

Hello

7Server is the latest, so right now it should be the same as 7.2.

The repos have to be added to the manifest after they are created, so I cannot think how you could automate that.

Regarding the difference between 7.x and 7Server repos, see Understanding Red Hat Content Delivery Network Repositories and their usage with Satellite 6, as it covers the differences and expected use case of each.

Regarding adding new minor release repos when they are released, this is an ideal use case for hammer (the Satellite CLI) Example:

ORG='Name_of_Your_Organization'
hammer repository-set enable --organization "$ORG"  \
--product 'Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server' \
--basearch='x86_64' \
--releasever='6Server' \
--name 'Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 Server (RPMs)'

What is the difference between repo "rhel-7-server-rpm" vs "rhel-7-server-eus-rpm" ?

Hi Chee Sin,

The rhel-7-server-rpm repository is the basic repository for the currently installed main RHEL edition. Extended Update Support is meant to be for those users who want to stick with on older sub version of the RHEL edition and nevertheless receive critical-impact security updates and urgent-priority bug fixes - but it is recommended to use always the latest version and when you agree and follow this recommendation, then there's no need to enable the rhel-7-server-eus-rpm repository.

Regards,
Christian
