RHEL 7.1 login screen problems?

Latest response

Hi all,

Long time lurker, first time poster. Thanks to all for the useful and informed discussions here.

I've found a strange issue with our RHEL 7 Workstation builds here, namely that something in the 7.1 updates has made a bit of a mess of the login screen. Prior to 7.1 the login screen and custom login banner for users looked great, but after the updates the fonts look to be all squashed up and spidery. Please see the two images attached for a better idea of the problem than I can describe.

I've done a little troubleshooting, but I'm at a bit of a loss to be honest. I know these things though:

  1. The issue doesn't look to be hardware/driver dependent - i.e.: the same problem happens across multiple physical and virtual machines
  2. It doesn't seem to be as a result of any fonts introduced or updated: I've run an update to 7.1 and excluded any fonts, and the issue still occurs
  3. The issue doesn't seem to be as a result of the updated gdm included in the updates to 7.1: I've run updates and excluded gdm, and the issue still occurs

I'm happy to be challenged on any of these assumptions though. I'm not looking for a magic bullet here, but rather hoping for a pointer or two as I'm running out of ideas.

I'm more than happy to share any details requested, or to try any suggestions. Please find attached 2 x images of the login screen before and after, plus a text file of updates required for a machine that displays this login screen issue after application of the updates.

Thanks for your time, Craig
