Update kernel to RHEL 6.6 boot progress bar freezes

Latest response

Hi,

I updated the kernel to rhel 6.6. After restarting the server the boot progress bar now stops at the very end and the graphical environment does not start (i see this through iLO, my server is HP ProLiant). I can sucessfully login via ssh, if I type "startx" from there the graphical interface starts on iLO Remote Console and I can use it for the user that started it (weird???).

Any ideas on how I can make the graphical environment start normally, as it did previously?

Thanks for any help, I am really stuck on this one.

Kind Regards

When you see the progress bar - you can hit ESC \ and it will toggle to the text output. (or you can remove "quiet" from the boot string when it boots).

After your system hangs and you get a login, you should be able to run a ps to see what is still running and you will likely see something with a capital 'S' which is likely what is hanging things up. Also - confirm what runlevel it is currently at.

ps -ef | grep S
who -r
grep ^id /etc/inittab

Did we get any update as to what caused the issue and how to fix it?
