RHEL 6.6 won't boot with dual monitors

Latest response

I have RHEL 6.6 installed on a HP Elitedesk 800 G1 Tower PC which has two monitors, one connected via display port and one connected via VGA. It gets past the POST and I see the GRUB 5 second countdown, but nothing else. It just stops there. If I unplug the VGA connection, it boots up fine, then I can plug the VGA back in and manually reconfigure my displays.

I checked the BIOS to see if there are any options which might affect this behavior but saw nothing helpful.

Any idea what's causing it to hang with the VGA connected?

Try removing rhgb and quiet from the kernel options in the grub.conf file to see if you can collect more info during booting.

No luck removing rhgb and quiet from the kernel options. It doesn't give any information at all. One monitor goes to sleep and the other ones goes black after the 5s countdown is done.

It is possible that the problem is related to your hardware. Have you checked to see if there is a known issue with the VGA connection with the manufacturer? How about the firmware? BIOS update?

Did you ever resolve your issue?

Do you have the X11 set to use xinerama mode? I have to have my nvidia drivers loaded to have this show both (maybe any) monitor displays.

Good luck.
