RHEV and Neutron - supported plugins

Latest response

Hi, I'm investigating options in working with Neutron as external network provider. As far as now, there are just two plugins supported for such integration - Linux Bridge and OVS. Does anybody know, whether there are plans to include other network options, that currently exist for Neutron? Particularly, I'm interested in Contrail (OpenContrail) support. Thank you.

is about openstack? or rhev? neutron is part of openstack module.
if you need other network module, then use ML2 plugin

It's about RHEV. It supports integration with Neutron (https://access.redhat.com/solutions/740793). I'm aware, that Neutron is positioned as part of Openstack, but it can be used as a standalone networking solution - which provides more flexibility.
As I read, current integration is limited to OVS and Linux bridge as the simpliest one, and uses some vdsm hooks to configure bridges on hypervisors as new VM is deployed and started. My question is - are there plans for RHEV to continue expanding amount of supported modes in working with Neutron?

Hello Viktor,

The current RHEV/Neutron integration is focused around the ML2 plugin with the OVS mechanism driver. The Linux bridge option is being dropped as we want to focus on the OVS-based solution. With this integration, the following Neutron capabilities are leveraged:

  • IP address management (IPAM) through the use of DHCP to assign IPv4 addresses to VMs
  • VM-level firewall filter through the use of security-groups
  • Internal isolated/private networks with overlay tunneling (GRE or VXLAN)

While we are working with some leading partners in the networking ecosystem, there is currently no official Plan of Record to support other 3rd party plugins.

Thanks,
Nir
