What is the purpose of weak-modules script shipped with Red Hat Enterprise Linux?

The weak-modules script determines which modules are kABI compatible with installed kernels and sets up the symlinks in /lib/*/weak-updates so that such compatible module can be used by kernels other than the one it was compiled against. This script is used by the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Driver Update Program and can be used by other vendors and their kernel modules....
