How do I disable the firewall in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3?

To completely disable the firewall in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 and newer (which solely uses iptables), use the following two commands:

# service iptables stop
# chkconfig iptables off

This will disable any O/S-based firewall you have enabled and will prevent the firewall from attempting to start at boot time.
