How do I make network interface changes (like those made with ifconfig) permanent?

Network interface settings made with ifconfig can be made to persist across system reboots by recording preferred settings in the file:

/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg- <interface-name>

where interface-name is the name of the interface you wish to configure. Many options are supported. The most common options are listed below:
