Why am I getting errors during a full system backup using tar?

Symptom:
During a full system backup using tar, "file shrank by n bytes; padding with zeros" error messages are generated
Solution:
This happens when tar is doing a backup of the /sys partition, the mount point for the RAM based sysfs
