How to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 5 (RHEL5) boot from SAN with multipath

Solution In Progress - Updated -

Issue

  • Anaconda only gives the option for MBR on non-multipath disks.
Firstly, when booting the installation media, mpath must be included in the boot options. This allows the specification of the boot disk using the multipath device /dev/mapper/mpath# (where # is a number)
However, when it comes to selecting where to install the MBR the only options presented are non-SAN disks. If one of the
internal disks is selected, then the system will not boot from SAN.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux versions 5.6 through 5.8 (RHEL5.6 RHEL5.7 RHEL5.8)
  • Boot from SAN
  • Device Mapper multipath
