Why do I get 'GFS2: Found stale lock file /var/lock/subsys/gfs2' when checking gfs2 status?

Issue

I am using gfs2. When I run service gfs2 status I get the following error:

GFS2: Found stale lock file /var/lock/subsys/gfs2
