LVM filesystem becomes read-only when `VMware CBT` is enabled in ESXi 5.1.

Solution Verified - Updated -

  • Changed Block Tracking (CBT) is a VMware feature that helps perform incremental backups.
The LVM filesystem becomes read-only when it is enabled.

  • From the vm perspective, the commonality with vms that had this issue were RHEL vms built by kickstart and created by Dynamic Ops. Upon further research, it was discovered that the setting: scsi0:X.writeThrough = “true” was only being added to vms created by Dynamic Ops. Windows vms did not exhibit this issue because the vmx file was being copied from templates. This issue does not happen on ESXi 4.1 or 5.5.
