Strange characters appear when accessing RHEL from other Operating Systems

Issue

  • When accessing a RHEL system via ssh using terminal programs on other Operating Systems like Mac OSX or Microsoft Windows, strange characters appear in certain command outputs. For example, while compiling a program with an error the following wrong characters might be displayed:
a.c:3: error: expected ג€˜=ג€™, ג€˜,ג€™, ג€˜;ג€™, ג€˜asmג€™ or ג€˜__attribute__ג€™ before ג€˜intג€™
  • Putty displays junk characters.
