Why does the counter not go to 8 and 9 when Ctrl+a used in vim?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Open vim in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5 and write something like test0001, and then press Ctrl+a to increase the counter, if the Ctrl+a is pressed seven times, instead of getting test0008, it shows test0010. Why the digits 8 and 9 not considered here? Is it a bug?

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5
  • vim
