tcsh does not allow periods in environment variable names

Issue

  • tcsh-6.17 gives an error when trying to set an environment variable with a period (or dot) in the name
  • tcsh-6.14 worked fine

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6
  • tcsh-6.14-*
  • tcsh-6.17-* (RHEL6 behavior change started in change from tcsh-6.17-12.el6 to tcsh-6.17-14.el6, RHEL6.1 -> 6.2)
