mod_jk fails requests from errno 11 after upgarding to 1.2.31+

We upgraded mod_jk and started seeing requests fail from timeouts that we hadn't seen before from errno 11:
[info] ajp_connection_tcp_get_message::jk_ajp_common.c (1223): (node1) can't receive the response header message from tomcat, network problems or tomcat (127.0.0.1:8009) is down (errno=11)
Environment
- JBoss Enterprise Application Platform (EAP)
- mod_jk 1.2.31+
