Kerberized NFSv4 mounts stop working with GSS_S_FAILURE - Too many open files

Issue

  • NFSv4 mounts that are utilizing kerberos authentication stop working and must be restarted in order to function again. When the issue occurs the user should be able to see similar errors to the ones below via /var/log/messages:
ERROR: GSS-API: error in handle_nullreq: gss_accept_sec_context(): GSS_S_FAILURE (Unspecified GSS failure.  Minor code may provide more information) - Too many open files
WARNING: open /proc/net/rpc/auth.rpcsec.init/channel failed: Too many open files

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.2
  • Server acts as an NFSv4 server with Kerberos authenthication
