How can I configure a load balancer without a single point of failure (SPOF)

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • What are you recommendations on setting up Production environment with Pound proxy going straight to JBoss EAP 5.1 without utilizing Apache HTTP. We would have to run JBoss on Port 80 to handle HTTP requests.
  • Is there a way to create a JBoss cluster based on virtual IP addresses that does not require a load balancer such as apache httpd in front? Every solution that we come across require load balancer in front, therefore introducing another single point of failure. We would like to create a cluster of few JBoss nodes that appear as one.

  • The load balancer is a single point of failure. We would like to find a way to remove the SPOF; I've seen solutions, like wackamole, which don't require a load balancer and I was wondering if JBoss can provide a similar solution.

Environment

  • JBoss Enterprise Application Platform (EAP)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
