On executing startx, why does it fail to load gui and goes back to the command line prompt ?

Issue

• Running the command startx from the console fails and it attempts to run but goes back to the command line prompt.
• Running the command startx from init level 3 does not invoke the default Desktop environment.
• Unable to run startx from console
