NFS share unable to change ownership using root id gives error - Operation not permitted

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • File created by "touch filename" and by doing "ls -l" no username and group name instead shows a numeric value of 10 digits. checked for this UID in /etc/passwd NO results found.
-rw-r--r--  1 4294967294 4294967294         0 Mar  4 15:06 testfile
  • Also when customer tried to change ownership by using chown receives "operation not permitted" message.
[root@hostname]# chown root:root testfile
chown: changing ownership of `testfile': Operation not permitted

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.8
  • NFS version 3
  • EMC NAS VNX 5700
