Unkillable hung processes after creating LVM snapshot volumes in RHEL6

Issue

  • LVM hang, unkillable hung processes, shortly after creating snapshots with:
# lvcreate -s -n <snapshot name> -l <snapshot size> <volume group>/<logical volume>
  • Various processes attempting to access or enquire about the new snapshot become frozen and cannot be killed with kill -9.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5
  • kernel-2.6.32-431.el6.x86_64 or later
  • LVM snapshots
