RHEL6: Cannot configure VLANs from a guest using an ixgbe SR-IOV Virtual Function

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • A KVM guest uses an SR-IOV Virtual Function from an Intel 10Gb NIC (82599 or similar) via PCI passthrough
  • Configuring a VLAN id for the guest from the host, via ip link set vf vlan or the libvirt XML works correctly
  • Configuring one or more VLANs for the guest using vconfig or ip link add does not work

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
  • KVM virtualization
  • Intel NIC SR-IOV Virtual Functions (ixgbevf driver) used as guest NIC via PCI passthrough
