How to configure shadow (passwd.adjunct) maps on Red Hat Enterpise Linux NIS clients bound to Solaris NIS masters?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

We are running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 NIS clients bound to a NIS master on Oracle Solaris 9, we have enabled passwd.adjunct NIS maps as documented by Red Hat to avoid exposing password hashes when not necessary. However, user authentication keeps failing. What shall we do to fix this?

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 NIS clients
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 NIS slaves
  • Sun/Oracle Solaris 9, 10 or 11 NIS master
