When print a multi-page file, the first line of the first page is blank in RHEL

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
  • Common Unix Printing System (RHEL)
  • Raw or text-only print queue

Issue

  • The fist invoice in the file has a blank invoice number, the rest of the invoices have the correct invoice number.
  • invoice line (first line in file) is blank on first page only.
  • Some of the text files (the invoice files) are being printed without the invoice number in the upper right corner of the first page.

Resolution

Make sure that any escape characters in the beginning of the file are separated from the first printable line with line termination characters (carriage-return/linefeed or newline). This may require a change to the application generating the print file.

Root Cause

PCL escape sequences at the beginning of the file may cause the printer to ignore the rest of the line after the PCL escape codes.
