System hangs at udev start with Broadcom 10GbE NIC on certain firmware versions

Issue

  • Systems become unbootable whenever I am using bnx2x version 1.72.51-0 from RHEL 5.8, and firmware version 7.4.8 or 7.8.16 - the systems hang when starting udev.
  • Test matrix of firmware versions:

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.8 (2.6.18-308.24.1.el5)
  • udev-095-14.27.el5_7.1
  • Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme II BCM57800 or BCM57810 10 Gigabit Ethernet using bnx2x driver
  • NIC firmware versions 7.4.8 or 7.8.16
