Red Hat Enterprise MRG realtime kernel is unresponsive - qla2xxx driver logs 'Mailbox cmd timeout'

Issue

  • We see qla2xxx 'Mailbox cmd timeout' in the messages. Some time after this the system will hang.
  • Since the update from RHEL6.3 to 6.5 with MRG-RT 2.4 we got intermittent qla2xxx failures on HP BL460c G6 systems.
  • Shortly after those often the system will hang.
  • Systems with realtime kernels of Red Hat Enterprise MRG become unresponsive/hung due to a deadlock of certain kernel threads as outlined under Root Cause.
  • The qla2xxx driver may log 'Mailbox cmd timeout' messages in connection with this deadlock.

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6 with realtime kernel
  • MRG-RT 2.4
  • realtime kernel 3.8.13-rt14.26.el6rt.x86_64
  • realtime kernel 3.8.13-rt27.33.el6rt.x86_64
