Network interfaces fail to rename using the "SLOT" naming scheme (ID_NET_NAME_SLOT) with multi-port NICs connected via a PCI bridge

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

At boot, systemd-udevd fails to consistently rename all ethernet interfaces based on the PCI slot scheme. Some interfaces are left with the legacy kernel name (eth0, eth1, eth3, eth6, ...) while others are renamed correctly.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 8, 9 and 10
  • Network interface naming
