perf mem record fails with "memory events not supported"

perf mem recordinside a virtual machine (KVM, VMware) fails with one of the following errors:
# perf mem record
failed: memory events not supported
# perf mem record
failed: no PMU supports the memory events
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux
- KVM virtual machine
