How to identify contributors to sudden and frequent load spikes?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • We are consistently observing high system load, but cannot identify processes in TASK_RUNNING or TASK_UNINTERRUPTIBLE state - likely because they are very short-lived.
  • By the time I check with ps command, they have already disappeared.
  • How can we identify the contributors to sudden and frequent load spikes, even when the tasks are too short-lived to be identified?

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux
