Suddenly maven task stopped working with PKIX path building failed error in Openshift Pipelines

Maven builds in Tekton pipelines have started failing with the following error:
PKIX path building failed: sun.security.provider.certpath.SunCertPathBuilderException: unable to find valid certification path to requested target -
Observing
unable to find valid certification path to requested targeterror while maven task attempts to fetch dependencies from our internal Nexus repository.
