Solarflare sfptpd logs "X seconds offset detected; will take X hours to slew"

Issue

We noticed very large offset being detected. It was fixed after restart of sfptpd service.

sfptpd[PID]: 1755440251.203 seconds offset detected; will take 487622292.0 hours to slew
sfptpd[PID]: 1755440221.508 seconds offset detected; will take 487622283.8 hours to slew
sfptpd[PID]: 1755440191.479 seconds offset detected; will take 487622275.4 hours to slew

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.10
  • Solarflare network interface card (NIC) using sfc driver
  • Solarflare/Xilinx PTP daemon sfptpd
