Configuring RWX Raw Block Storage on HPE CSI Driver for OpenShift Virtualization

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

OpenShift Virtualization requires VM boot disks to reside on shared storage that supports ReadWriteMany for VM Live Migrations

This is necessary to allow seamless live migration between nodes without interrupting disk access.

Prior to version 2.5.0, the HPE CSI Driver only provided RWX access using the NFS Provisioner, which was unsupported for OpenShift Virtualization. HPE explicitly warns against using the NFS Server Provisioner for KubeVirt boot volumes or VM images, as it is not suitable for performance or reliability. As a result, VM live migration would fail or pause if backed by ReadWriteOnce volumes.

Environment

  • OpenShift Container Platform 4.16+
  • HPE CSI Operator v2.5.2+
  • HPE Nimble Storage
  • HPE Alletra 5000/6000 series
