Intel E810 "ice" NIC fails with "An unknown error occurred when loading the DDP package"

Issue

  • Intel E810 NIC using ice driver fails to load after update from RHEL 9.5 to RHEL 9.6. Kernel log contains various failures like:
ice: Intel(R) Ethernet Connection E800 Series Linux Driver

ice 0000:c8:00.0 ens21f0np0: renamed from eth0
ice 0000:c8:00.0 ens21f0np0: Failed to get link info, error -5
ice 0000:c8:00.0: Failed to delete VSI 6 in FW - error: -5
ice 0000:c8:00.0: Unable to turn off FW logging, status: -5
ice 0000:c8:00.0: Unable to unregister FW logging, status: -5

    • kernel-5.14.0-570.24.1.el9_6.x86_64
  • Intel E810 network card using ice driver
    • NIC has NVM (firmware) version 4.71
  • linux-firmware package providing DDP (Dynamic Device Personalization) soft-loadable firmware file:
    • /usr/lib/firmware/intel/ice/ddp/ice-1.3.41.0.pkg.xz
