[OpenShift Container Platform v4.18 and earlier] Systems using multipath on the sysroot will fail to boot if fewer than two paths are available in RHCOS

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

On systems running Red Hat CoreOS (RHCOS) as part of OpenShift Container Platform (OCP) version 4.18 and earlier, enabling multipath on the sysroot (root) device causes the system to fail to boot if fewer than two active paths to the storage are available at boot time.

This issue may occur whether multipathing is configured during the initial installation or added later (as a day-two operation). It is commonly encountered during updates or reboots, which can lead to confusion about the root cause, as symptoms may appear unrelated to the actual storage path condition.

Environment

  • Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform (OCP) version 4.18 or earlier
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux CoreOS (RHCOS)
  • Multipath configured on the sysroot (root) device using device-mapper-multipath
