DNF command fails with "Segmentation Fault (core dumped)" when accessing repositories with large metadata

Solution In Progress - Updated -

Issue

  • When executing any dnf command that interacts with configured repositories (e.g., dnf update, dnf install, dnf repolist), the command fails with a "Segmentation fault (core dumped)" error message.
  • This prevents dnf from successfully performing any package management operations.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 8, 9, and 10
    • Specifically observed on Red Hat Enterprise Linux release 8.10 (Ootpa)
  • This limitation applies to all currently available versions of dnf and libsolv.
    • Example versions where this has been observed include:
      • dnf version: dnf-4.14.0-17.el9.noarch
      • libsolv version: libsolv-0.7.24-3.el9.x86_64
  • Applies to both physical and virtual systems.
  • SELinux status is not a contributing factor.
