RHEL virtual machine display screen goes black and does not come back when running on VMware

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Virtual machine display goes black and does not respond to mouse or keyboard.
  • Waiting a long time after VM boot without login makes the VM screen go black and it does not wake up anymore.
  • Only getting a "loading spinning cursor/wheel" when accessing the VM via VMWare apps such as vsphere or other management interfaces.
  • This issue also occurs when the guest OS reaches a configured "Screen Blank" timeout during a session.
    • Even when the Web Console screen is black and unresponsive, SSH access to the virtual machine typically remains functional.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux
  • VMware ESXi 7, 8, 9
  • VMware vSphere 7, 8, 9
