r8169 0000:01:00.0: unknown chip XID 688 error

Issue

  • Realtek RTL8125 interface is missing upon using the default driver r8169.
  • The following messages are reported in dmesg.
[    3.185095] r8169 0000:01:00.0: enabling device (0000 -> 0003)
[    3.185368] r8169 0000:01:00.0: unknown chip XID 688

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.6 and earlier
  • Realtek RTL8125 2.5GbE Controller network interface card using r8169 driver
