Reducing CPU usage of gvfs-udisks2-volume-monitor daemon with network mounts

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

When using GNOME Desktop Environment and:

  • Mounting a large number of NFS shares (e.g., 200 mount points), the gvfs-udisks2-volume-monitor process monitors all mount points and may consume CPU cycles at regular intervals. This can be impactful on high-performance systems where CPU resources must remain available for critical and time-sensitive applications.
  • Users accessing these systems do not need to mount local and remote filesystems using Nautilus.
  • The system administrator wants to prevent mount points from appearing in Nautilus.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8
  • GNOME Desktop Environment
  • gvfs
  • udisks2
  • Network File System (NFS)
