Getting the error 'Symbolic link not allowed or link target not accessible' in Apache webserver

Issue

  • A symbolic link under /var/www/html is pointing to a location outside the Apache DocumentRoot the following error is seen in logs after a access attempt:
AH00037: Symbolic link not allowed or link target not accessible: /var/www/html/repo

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 8
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 9
  • Apache Webserver (httpd)
