Issue when provisioning new machines due to incorrect MODE configuration on the machine-config

Issue

  • The cluster is stuck on provisioning new machines with the error below:

    <timestamp> <instanceName> podman[1479]: <timestamp>    1514 firstboot_complete_machineconfig.go:65] error: failed to update OS to quay.io/openshift-release-dev/ocp-v4.0-art-dev@sha256:128f0dc5b4f42344ec1220cee05c087936e8864f84dc9cb9786c4df55824d2c5 : error running rpm-ostree rebase --experimental ostree-unverified-registry:quay.io/openshift-release-dev/ocp-v4.0-art-dev@sha256:128f0dc5b4f42344ec1220cee05c087936e8864f84dc9cb9786c4df55824d2c5: error: Creating importer: Failed to invoke skopeo proxy method OpenImage: remote error: loading registries configuration: loading drop-in registries configuration "/etc/containers/registries.conf.d/<machineConfigName>.conf": open /etc/containers/registries.conf.d/<machineConfigName>.conf: permission denied
    
  • After changing the machineconfig the machines cannot be scaled up anymore.

  • The new machines appear stuck on Provisioned state.
