Error message "Unable to send trailing nul to printer: Broken pipe" while printing to network printers in RHEL

Issue

Recently when printing large documents, we've been receiving the error

Unable to send trailing nul to printer: Broken pipe
Remote host did not accept data file (32)

Print jobs are randomly ending with the following error every day:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5.8
Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) 1.3.7
Printing to a network-connected printer via only the "lpd://" (Line Printer Daemon Protocol) (i.e. not socket:// or ipp://)
